Lime kiln, kiln for burning limestone to lime.
In the oven calcium carbonate is heated to 1000-1100 degrees, and then burned to calcium oxide (quicklime, pack stone, quick lime). Then turn off the burnt lime with water, calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) is formed.
The oldest traces of lime-burning have been found in Göbekli Tepe in Anatolia and is 11,000 years old.
On Gotland it was common for industrial lime burning because of an abundance of raw material. Lively exports of lime in the Baltic region led to the lime mill boom during the 1600s.Posted on February 4, 2012 with 2 notes ()
